There are moments in life that, at the time, feel ordinary but later become turning points. The day I met Michael Purves was one of those moments.
Before meeting him, elite universities such as Wharton, Columbia, or Harvard were institutions I deeply admired but subconsciously placed out of reach. Michael was one of the first people who showed me, through both his experience and his mindset, that these paths are not unrealistic aspirations but achievable outcomes when approached with discipline and clarity.
Michael is the CEO of Tallbacken Capital Advisors and has held senior strategic roles across global financial institutions. What stood out to me most was not only his career trajectory, but his exceptional analytical insight. He has a rare ability to break down complex systems, whether financial markets or decision making frameworks, into clear and actionable thinking. Listening to him reinforced the importance of understanding how ideas connect rather than memorizing isolated facts.
One of the key lessons I learned from him is that talent alone is not enough. Without structure, rigor, and long term thinking, ambition remains limited. Michael emphasized the value of mastering fundamentals, asking the right questions, and developing intellectual discipline. This perspective applies not only to finance, but equally to academic and personal growth.
He also showed me how powerful it is to learn from people who have already walked the path you aspire to follow. When someone with real experience speaks openly about effort, setbacks, and consistency, success stops feeling abstract and starts feeling tangible.
Meeting Michael did not give me a shortcut or a formula. What it gave me was confidence. The confidence that aiming for top universities and ambitious goals is realistic when driven by curiosity, analytical thinking, and sustained effort. That lesson has stayed with me and continues to shape how I approach my future.
